California Proposition 65

California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, known as Proposition 65, requires businesses to warn Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.

Which products this covers

This warning applies to the natural stone, porcelain, ceramic and terrazzo products sold by Pera Tile, including tile, mosaics, trims, pavers, copings, ledger panels and slabs. These materials contain crystalline silica.

When exposure can happen

Exposure to crystalline silica occurs mainly when dust is created: cutting, grinding, drilling, sanding, polishing or demolishing the material. Breathing respirable crystalline silica dust over time can cause silicosis, lung cancer and other serious lung disease.

Working safely

• Cut wet, or use tools with integrated dust collection, whenever possible.
• Work in well-ventilated areas and keep other people away from the dust.
• Wear eye protection and a properly fitted respirator suitable for silica dust.
• Clean up with a HEPA vacuum or wet methods; do not dry sweep or use compressed air.
• Employers must follow the Cal/OSHA and federal OSHA respirable crystalline silica standards.
